Black & White Filters

Black & White filters are most commonly used for control of colours and contrast when shooting Black & White film - the classic application is the use of Yellow, Orange or Red filters - all of which cut blue light - to darken blue skys and create more dramatic Photographs. (yellow offers the most gentle effect, followed by orange and with red cutting almost all blue light normally yielding alomst black skys)

One of the most famous examples of the use of a red filter is Ansel Adams photograph "Monolith: The Face of Half Dome" from 1927.
